Find out why we are considered the best in the industry—and still don't need to charge for technical support!

BOSS DAMBRK™ is the leading software that can model hydrodynamic flood routing, dam and bridge failures, storage effects, floodplain overbank flow, and flood wave attenuation. It includes capabilities that allow it to be used for dynamic flood routing, dam safety analysis, and reservoir spillway analysis and design. BOSS DAMBRK is used by FERC, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state regulatory agencies, and thousands of consultants worldwide.

Computational Analysis Engine

BOSS DAMBRK includes advanced computational capabilities, allowing it to simulate flow for a variety of structures and conditions:

  • Reservoir spillways and gate control structures
  • Interconnected reservoirs and cascading dam failures
  • Levee flood overtopping
  • Tributary inflows, including simultaneous tributary dam failures
  • Various regulating structures
  • Culverts and bridges

BOSS DAMBRK solves the complete non-linear St. Venant equations of open channel flow numerically at all specified and interpolated cross sections. The solution scheme will automatically interpolate the necessary cross sections and will adaptively adjust the computational time step for the defined boundary conditions during the simulation. A number of numerical flow solutions are available for both subcritical and supercritical (mixed) flow conditions:

  • High-order, fully dynamic
  • Diffusive wave
  • Kinematic wave
  • Quasi steady-state

BOSS DAMBRK’s computational engine is extremely numerically stable, and can automatically recover from non-convergence conditions. This allows it to adapt to the current numerical conditions, and continue on with the computations. In addition, BOSS DAMBRK’s solution method is extremely fast—orders of magnitude faster than other computational methods. For example, for a 52-mile long dam failure model, DAMBRK completed the analysis in less than 1 minute and UNET (HEC-RAS) took over 3 hours. This speed improvement allows the engineer to run many more scenarios and comparisons. Also, the BOSS DAMBRK computational model will automatically handle floating point exception errors that will cause UNET and other unsteady flow models to terminate with exception. BOSS DAMBRK is a real work-horse for the consulting engineer—saving him time and money when completing a large project.

BOSS DAMBRK can analyze cascading dam failures within a single analysis, where an upstream dam will trigger the failure of downstream dams as the flood wave is routed downstream. The user has total control on which dam structures should be considered to fail during the flow routing, thereby allowing him to quickly review various scenarios. Unlike most unsteady flow models available, BOSS DAMBRK can handle both subcritical and supercritical (mixed) flow conditions with speed and stability.

Linear and non-linear piping or overtopping breach progression can be specified at a dam structure, along with constant or time-dependent turbine flow and a variety of spillway types. Complex sloping dam crests and bridge decks can be analyzed. Explanatory notes can be attached to individual cross-sections, allowing field observations to be included with the analysis output. Observed high water elevations can be defined, allowing the user to easily calibrate the model to an event.

BOSS DAMBRK represents the latest understanding in dam failures and uses hydrodynamic theory to predict dam-break flood wave formation and routing. The program can consider the effects of reservoir inflow, breach formation, spillway and turbine flow, downstream tailwater elevations, valley storage, frictional resistance, and lateral inflows and outflows. BOSS DAMBRK will report the flood wave travel time, time to flood stage, time to peak elevation, and the corresponding water surface elevations. Combined with our RiverCAD software, DAMBRK can automatically generate flood inundation maps in seconds!

Any defined cross-section can be used as a template for defining new cross-sections, significantly shortening the time required to set up a large model. The user can define characteristic template cross-sections, and then quickly propagate additional cross-sections up and downstream. Also, the software simultaneously supports both US and metric (SI) units, allowing the user to switch from one unit of measurement to the other at any time.
